Raw Honey- Why it's SO Good.

Raw honey is not only delicious but also has so many health benefits. Honey contains no fat, protein, or fiber. The end product is dependent on what flowers the bee's have pollinated. This can effect the color and flavor of the honey.  Sadly, most of the honey you find in grocery stores is pasteurized, and also very high in sugar. The high heat used in production kills unwanted yeast, and can improve the color and texture, removes any crystallization, and extends the shelf life. This takes away from the natural properties and health benefits raw honey can provide. If you are looking to start using raw honey, find a local farmers market or farm stand, often times you can find raw honey, made local at these venues.

Raw honey contains an array of plant chemicals that act as antioxidants. Its a great organic sweetener of course and an antioxidant powerhouse!!! Some honey may even have as many antioxidants as your favorite fruits and vegetables. Antioxidants help to protect your body from cell damage due to free radicals. Free radicals contribute to the aging process in the human body, and may also contribute to the development of chronic diseases. Antioxidants can help lower blood pressure, which can be a precursor for heart disease if not properly maintained. When consuming honey, studies have shown moderate reductions in blood pressure.

Studies have shown that raw honey can kill unwanted bacteria and fungus, this is because it contains hydrogen peroxide which is an an antiseptic. Its effectiveness as an antibacterial or anti-fungal varies depending on the honey.

Honey can also be used to help as a homeopathic medicine to help with sore throats, and digestive issues. Some studies have shown it improves coughs in children, one even showed it worked better than two of the commonly known cough medicines.

It helps ward off allergies, having a teaspoon of local honey a day can help build up an immunity to local outdoor allergens. It has also been known to aid in weight management, and if full of vitamin B, which is a great source of natural energy. It may also help aid in healthy sleep, which we could all use more of.
